The Henry Ford Early College is a partnership between Henry Ford Community College, Henry Ford Health Systems and Dearborn Public Schools. The fiscal agency is Wayne RESA.
Students enrolling in the Henry Ford Early College will have the opportunity to simultaneously complete their high school graduation requirements, associate’s degree and professional certification. The schedule of classes students take will fulfill all sets of requirements unless more time is needed. Students delaying graduation until the end of the fifth year of this program will have all of their dual enrollment college tuition paid. Students completing the graduation requirements following year five but not the associates degree requirements may take more time but will be responsible for all college costs unless scholarships or stipends are available.
Beginning with the 2007-2008 school year, students will spend their entire school day taking classes at the Henry Ford Community College Dearborn Heights Campus along with other college students. Science laboratory experiences will take place at the Henry Ford Health Systems building near Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
The Henry Ford Early College is anticipating enrolling 60 ninth grade students for the 2007-2008 school year. These students will commit themselves to an experience that is apart from the regular high school experience and devoted to a rigorous curriculum. By the second year of the program students will be taking college level classes, some of which will require students to attain qualifying scores on math and reading tests.
Since students will commit to this program for five years and the experiences contained within the program are significantly different from those held by typical high school students, students and their parents should be clear on what could lead to success. The following rubric delineates qualities or expectations needed for success in this program. Assess where the student would fit into each category. The more the student is able to respond to statements at the left of each line, the greater the expectation for success. If the student scores to the right of several categories, s/he might expect to need more support and to devote more time (in daily work and/or years) to complete the requirements.
